Along with the fan service, the film genuinely tries to tie all the films together in a way that aspires to be familiar but fresh. I gave up my hopes for the franchise after they scraped this concept to go back to retreading a story that will, realistically, fail to match the quality of the first 2.

I actually liked Salvation, for many of the reasons outline by OP. It was nice to see the post-Judgement Day future finally being used as a setting for a Terminator film.
